I'm coloring Robert Atkins daily sketches for the month of April. The theme is the Avengers.

Here's the first, the Black Panther.

Great job on the Black Panther piece! Really beautiful work.

The Black Knight piece is kind of hit and miss to me. Some parts I like, but the knockout on the scale mail confuses the silhouette, and the rock in the far background is not receding at all.

The cape is also problematic, it does not have a lot of form. Rendering the upper and under sides the same flattens it out.

The sky could use a bit of a light/horizon to dark gradient to help it not be so flat.

I guess the thing that's confusing the image overall is inconsistent light sources.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the crit, Ryan. I agree with you on the holds and bg needing a gradient. I really never interpreted that rock formation as being in the bg, though I suppose it could be. The light source in this piece is tricky though. For instance the way you lit it ignores the shadow cast by his right leg. I saw it as being lit more from above/slightly behind.

Ha, I didn't notice that. You're right, looking at the lineart (http://ratkins.deviantart.com/art/Aveng ... -295310897) I agree the light source is supposed to be above him. I would still push that back leg back, it doesn't need to have the same value range as his other scale mail bits.

I like what you've done in the background: nice mix of colors, but not fussy. Personally, I'd drop that background outline line art entirely.

However, the colors on BP's tree are too close to those bg colors. Off the top of my head I'd say darken it overall - those highlights are distracting from BP's own highlights.

You wanna make some magic? Take whatever overall color you go with for tha foreground tree and use it for some reflected color on the parts of BP that would get some reflected light off the tree.

Good crit from Ryan. All I'd add is that the rock texture and color are too uniform, and honestly too busy given the level of detail on BK himself.

Nice. I think you'd get more impact if you darkened up IM away from his blasty-hands. The red if that background fire is too intense and I find it distracting, and it's too far away to have any effect on IM's lighting, so subdue that fire somehow, and let the edges away from the blast drop away. This will all put more focus on IM and his blast.

Too much attention is being drawn to the highlights on his arm. Punch up the highlights on that foreward hand, and I'd try to simplify the face that cluster of little muscles just tot eh left of his jaw. Also, if the brightest light is coming from the left, then there's an issue with how his hair and head is lit. His trapezius should be castinga shadow on his face (that will help tto simplify the face), and there should be edge lighting on his hair. I wonder if the main light is supposed to be from the other side.

The lighting on her face and neck is not consistent with how her chest and collar are lit. I'd lend a bit of that face lighting to her collar and chest and shoulders.

My eye wants to see some of those flames licking off of her, to make it look more like she's generating them?

Hi Art, thanks for taking the time to give me some crits. You've made some great observations and given me plenty to think about in these and future works. I appreciate it!
