My sketchbook scans (some NSFW)

Postby michael-e-w » Thu Feb 17, 2011 10:28 am

For my New Year's resolution, I have been trying to sketch something everyday. Mostly it's random crap, but it's fun and I get some passing ideas that would usually die a quiet death on the page. Also, I am trying to teach myself to use watercolors -- my brother gave me an awesome Pentel Aquash set for Xmas, and I have some pencils and cheap brushes as well. Anyways, I'm not half as good as Nick or Chris or anyone really, but here are a few of my favorites so far. If you wanna see more, I started a new blog to house them.

The last is my favorite so far. It's taken from a photo from 1955. It's of my mom and her sister, who are one year and a few days apart. So I made a print of it for both of them for their bdays this year.

Thanks again, Chris! We need to set up a trade for small things. I still need my Maleficent! haha

Here's a project I am doing on a big watercolor sheet (instead of just my sketchbook) of aging artists: rockers, comedians, actors, etc. I took a mobile pic of the just two. If I'm doing well at all, you won't need me to say who's who.

Thanks again, guys!
I never used watercolors until about a month ago, but I am loving the trial and error of it.

First piece: all my aging artists. I found a stack of AARP mags at Goodwill for $1, and I wanted to use them as reference. Also, stole the first two I posted before from a Rolling Stone issue. See if you can name whose images I butchered!

Second piece: this is like my third watercolor attempt ever. So, it's older, but fits with this I guess. I think I truncated her face or something, but it's Zooey Deschanel (love her).

Nice! I do like ink and watercolor! I'm a little tired, but in addition to Iggy & Mick I see Joan Rivers, and some others I recognize, but whose names escape me.

Made a new blog post with scans. It has some NSFW stuff, hence the change of title to this post too. Below are a small sampling of the post - some of my faves in case you don't wanna click through.
First are some cards I did up as samples for a local gay bookstore to see if the owner wants to take on some of my larger work for consignment. They are inkwashes and watercolors on those small watercolor artist trading cards you can get for a $1. Thinking of selling them as bookmarks or getting some magnets to make them refrigerator clutter. haha
Image
Next is just an inkwash study of male figure. I just like how it came out.
Image
Next is a pin-up girl from a 1972 Playboy I found at a garage sale. I wanted to make a cartoon-y, yet sexy girl, and she had both. Playing with Copic markers for first time.
Image
This next one is one of the favorite things I've ever done just because it came into my head, and I got as close as possible to what I was thinking on the page. It's Hal and Sinestro ala Bugs and Daffy/Elmer/whomever. Again Copics, and I can't remember but I think GL's powers were down with Prismacolors.
Image
This is my next favorite thing. I found House of Mystery #289 at another garage sale (tis the season I suppose), and I fell in love with the cover. Literally, I was just drawn to it in every way -- story, composition, color theory, etc. There's no indication inside, but I googled it and all signs point to it being done by the master Joe Kubert. I redid it on 9 x 12 140lb watercolor paper with India ink and watercolors. Now, I am not very good at getting everything detail for detail, so there are slight changes in character placement and expression, but the change in color was my decision. I like it, but am thinking of trying to sell it (not sure what the legality of that is though).
