GutterZombie Colouring Challenge // No. 2 // Superman

Postby Ryan » Fri Oct 22, 2010 12:23 pm

I thought this was a good idea that started a little shaky, so I figured I would take the initiative to start the second week. The lineart is the cover to Action Comics 847 by Renato Guedes & Jose Wilson Magalhaes. The lineart is really open, so there is a lot of opportunity for practicing modeling and defining a light source.

Have fun!

Haha, yeah, that's right. I'll revise the credits in the first post.

Right on, I will get started on this Monday or so. I loved the idea of the last one but once I dug into it the lines were pretty low res :(

So I had about 30 minutes of lunch time to kill at work and I can't use my Wacom here but decided I'd go ahead and try it with a mouse. Haven't done that in years but it came out looking fairly decent and figured I'd at least show the WIP.
I like open lineart like this and can't to get home and work on this.

Sweet! I've got another page to knock out tonight, but I'm going to try to jump on this tomorrow for sure. Nice choice, Ryan!

I haven't colored anything in over a month, feeling a bit rusty.

Had flats and some submission work today, hope to get started on this in the morning if I don't have too much work in my inbox when I get up.

Your clouds are beautiful, Ryan, but the lineart in them up around Superman's right hand is distracting. But, man, that sky is purdy.....

I'm not sure anyone else would really notice it, but it looks like the area just off of Supe's left shoulder is supposed to be clouds instead of cape. Anybody else reading it that way or am I just crazy?

BEAUTIFUL, Ryan. That's what I was hoping to see in this challenge: interpretations of dramatic light source. There's none indicated in the line art, so the light could come from anywhere. I like that you put it behind Supes.

Hmm. Might be.

Thanks so much, Laura! I really wanted to practice the red glow of when skin is lit from behind, and thought this was a good opportunity.

You are right about the cape/clouds thing, Ross. Didn't even notice that.

I'm gonna go ahead and say it: Overall i think Ryan's Superman is a little too dark. Also i'm not sure about the highlights on the bottom right hand. i want them to be large and blocky like on the rest of the body.

Way to go Ryan! I love those clouds that you did and the style you used on it.
I already had an idea of what I wanted and went for a warmer look.
