Great sketches Dave.
I really like the second version.
The first one has Wolverine splayed out, and at the apex of action. (Which is honestly boring) By SHOWING the height of action, the viewer doesn't need to use their imagination at all. The image is less engaging then. the 2nd and 3rd versions both show the scene "right" before the action really takes place. The instant before, and not the standing around posing, or charging into battle that many images are as well. Nailing the moment before, or after an high point of action is awesome. The viewer is engaged to fill in the blanks of what happened themselves.
Nailing the height of action in an action panel of course makes sense. Like the above panel with Spiderman vs Reptile. In the panel, you want people to see and understand exactly what is happening instantly. some panels can be more reflective and show moments like I was talking about before, if the story calls for it. But a pinup and cover, are inherently more involved. You need to tell an entire story with one image. And, as I said, hitting the high point of action, you don't, all you tell is that one instant of story.
I like the second one more then the third, because wolverine is counter to Hulk's position. Angled in opposite directions. And wolverine pulls our eye down and into the middle of the image.
