I like it, Cedworth, I think you pulled off the night scene very well. The only thing I might change is the color hold on the clouds, maybe darken the color of the line a bit.

If the light source was top left, would Superman's arm be putting a cast shadow on his shoulder, face or cape? Just an idea.

yeah, I agree with the holds, I originally had them just at the back of the scene, should have kept that. And the cast shadow, the thing is, I didn't want to cover his face, I had it in there at one point and it was too distracting without enough of a payoff.

Here's Mine...
This definitely was a challenge... the clouds, the depth, the lights...

Here's my version. Cloud rendering is not something I'm particularly good at, so can't say I'm entirely happy with the background.

Any crits/comments/paint overs would be greatly appreciated.

It's started...!! Wow, this is TOO COOOL! I'll dig right into it myself.

Maybe we could add an idea that we suggest some lineart for everyone to colour in-between the challenges? That could be pretty cool, everyone suggests a fav'. I suppose we might have to do a list of peeps that want in, then, so everyone knows when it's their turn to pick what to colour.

What do you think?

I'll get to work on Superman ASAP!! XD It'll have to be one of those ultra-fast thingies this, methinks. ( gotta' get trough the other ones too.)

I think if you leave it up to a vote, you're eventually going to have people lose interest if they go on a streak of having the art they're interested in working on not get selected. I do like the idea of setting up a rotating schedule. Maybe we can start a thread and have a mod pin it so that people can express interest in participating and be added to a rotation? Or move these to a sub-forum within the Public Gallery like the Process sub-forum?

I think the figure work looks very much like a gouache painted poster so I looked for some examples of that style of painting:

http://www.angloboerwarmuseum.com/Boer69b_pic_press23_5gouache.html

Aside from those as inspiration I guess the thing to do is find some sky ref that matches what you are doing.

To be clear, what you have done looks like a very good start, it just looks unfinished in parts.

Best,
Jason.

UUNGH!! Wow... that actually took longer than I anticipated. Of course, there was down-time for eating as well.. but still!

Mine isn't so polished, mostly just messin' about, trying some fast and lose spontaneous kind of colouring. Figured I'd fool around a bit with some small extras as well, just to be a bit different.

Thanks for the links. I guess the only way to improve weaknesses in one's art is to keep working on them. I'm off to find some sky/cloud reference to practice on... :)
