It's a good piece, but as much as the orange pops against all that blue, I don't understand where it's coming from.
The entire piece just looks so heavy and busy without much place for the reader's eye to rest. You're kind of asking the reader to work pretty hard to understand what's going on here amidst all the visual noise.
Simpler might be better in terms of leading the reader's eye.

@CBCebulski: Unfrotunately, a lot of colorists are hired simply for their speed, not ability. And since they deliver, they get more work. A bad cycle.

I actually composited the background out of free stock images, then unified the palette with gradient maps, color, and overlay layers. I then painted over that to try and unify everything more. I also have a few "stock" planets I've created I use as starting points. I have a couple that I've used forever from way back when Greg Martin first posted his tutorials.

One handy tip I picked up from Kelsey Shannon is that the Smart Blur filter is a great way to simplify a photography and make it more painterly so that it doesn't appear too photorealistic in comparison.

very cool :D

yeah i do much the same when i have to do space stuff. mix n matching and all that

havent messed with the smart blur though. but ive heard that before. ill have to play around with it some :)
