Wow, great about the money, crappy about the vacation being ruined though. I think more companies are willing to go further to please the customer because the economy is shit now. I just found out actually, that Amazon decided to give me a full refund for the shipping as well as product, because I guess it got damaged during it. A few years ago they probably wouldn't have gone that far to please the customer. I still can't get over it, most companies won't refund shipping costs. :?

Nearby sites of interest: Isla Mujeres for more snorkling or scuba diving; Xel Ha for swimming with a mixture of fresh water and salt water fish in the same lagoon; Chichen Itza for Mayan pyramids, observatory, sink holes, virgin sacrifice, etcetera.

If anyone offers you a bottle of Kahlua, they're trying to sell you timeshares in a condo.

Hope you have a great trip, Dave!

I love all that you've mentioned.... and all the etceteras too.

Sorry to hear the diving wasn't so great Dave. Better luck next time.

If you make it to Thailand, check out Hin Daeng and Hin Muang for pristine coral. It's an hour or more boat ride from the coast and is not actually an island. They're both massive coral covered rock formations that barely crest above the surface. And it's not near the shore. So nobody is snorkeling there or stepping on it. It's best 15 or so meters down. Great diving.

Anyway, sorry it didn't work out so great this time though sounds like you saw some cool stuff anyway.

Quick update:

Visa now wants all the money back that they credited me for the trip when my hotel made me pay again while I was staying in Mexico. Even though Conquest Vacations didn't pay my hotel due to their bankruptcy, and probably didn't pay my airline.

Looks like I'm in for lots of paperwork and months of frustration trying to fight this... Why should I pay for services if Conquest took my money and ran? I tried to explain to Visa that just because I made it back home does not mean that my money went to the right place, but they're being intentionally thick about it. "Well, you got your vacation, didn't you?" kind of thing.

Not the point. If the Hotel got shafted, and the airline got shafted, I don't see why I should not be protected by my credit card's fraud insurance. I guarantee that at least the airline will see their money- Canada has a very good travel services insurance plan. I should see my money as well.

that sucks man.

I've always used American Express for travelley, uncertain things because, generally, they are much better at this kind of conflict resolution. The deal with AMEX is that, unlike visa, the merchant doesn't get your money until amex gets it from you. So you retain at least some negotiating strength. I've had to dispute charges three times in my life, twice with amex where it was "me: Hi, yeah, here's my story [...], them: ok, just send us your balance minus that charge" and that was it, versus mastercard which was such a pain in the ass I just gave up.

Doesn't really help you now, I know. :-(

It's frustrating because i KNOW the person at the other end of the phone understands what I'm saying, and they refuse to admit it, because they'd be forced to give me my money.

Oh well, I'm good at patiently working my way through stuff like this, and it's enough money to bother going through the hoops for.

this is EXACTLY why I couldn't deal with mastercard.

It's not so much the effort, it's the frustration when you're talking to someone, and you know they're lying, and they know they're lying, and you know that they know that they're lying, and yet you are powerless.
