Looking for colorist - HORROR

Postby TheIronRachel » Tue Jul 12, 2011 7:30 am

My name is Rachel Deering, and I'm a writer. I've teamed up with a penciller named Alan Quah to help with my newest project, and now that he's finishing up some of the penciled pages, I need to begin looking for a colorist.

The ideal candidate would have a working knowledge of horror and the ability to establish a dark and moody atmosphere through color. I will warn everyone now that I absolutely detest the way most comics are colored these days, so if you're one of those folks who likes to lay down super saturated colors and embellish them with hot white bright spots and unnatural glows, this is not the gig for you.

Some examples of coloring work that I do like:

Here is a page sample of the pencil work by Alan Quah, to give you an idea of the type of material you'd be working with.

Interested parties can send a link to a portfolio of their work, which SHOULD include some examples of horror or dark themes, or you can have a go at coloring the sample page I've provided. I have a higher resolution .tif of the page, if it is requested. The page rate will be based upon industry standards and your level of experience.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Full on painting over pencils. Tall order. I noticed you haven't posted a page rate.

A page rate is something I would rather discuss with the artist on an individual basis. I'm not going to post a static page rate, because not every artist deserves to be paid the same. I pride myself on paying well for quality work.

Jason's question isn't out of line here, if you read the instructions on the Index page for this forum, they don't accept backend jobs, which means promised payment after publication. It's different for Marvel, DC, IDW, we know they pay. Many of us have been offered payment and never received it for hard work, conned by people like Josh Hoopes (search him on Google). Writers have been conned by him as well. So please don't take it the wrong way, we just want to make sure we do get paid for a job we do. Most pro artists ask for half upfront or pay after every 1-6 pages. We put a watermark on a low res JPG and don't send the high res until paid. You can always go to DeviantArt if you are not satisfied with this, it's really part of the rules here:

"**NO POSTING FOR FREE WORK!! INCL. BACK END DEALS** "

And most of us do research the emails, so we know if you usually don't offer paid jobs, another reason we might get skeptical.

The page is very nicely drawn but when I researched email I found this in "Collaborations and Non Paying Projects":

I wasn't at all offended by Jason's question, and I think a page rate is a very valid concern. In my original post I stated: "The page rate will be based upon industry standards and your level of experience."

And yes, that forum post was from me when I had a different last name and no money to sink into a creative project. What can I say? Things have changed, haha.

Thankfully, though, I have found a colorist. I just wanted to make sure that I don't come off as a sketchy type or a bad person, cause I may well need to hire someone from here in the future. I completely understand the wary nature of an artist, especially those of us who have been burned on an artistic endeavor, and I don't blame people one bit for that extra bit of caution.
